Making cheap trees

The frustration over the price and apparent mediocre quality of commercially available trees made me look for alternatives. My father came to the rescue.  He created a really interesting and cheap method on the fly for creating trees of various shapes and sizes.

Unfortunately, I neglected to take pictures as we made these trees, but here’s roughly what we did.  Took a 14 gauge stranded wire, cut about a 3” section and removed the outer insulation. Tightly twisted one end which becomes the trunk. Next we spread the wires out the other end to make branches. You can randomly twist two or three of the thin wires together for thicker branches. You trim some of the branches as not all branches of a tree would be the same length.  You can easily give shape to the branches.

Once that’s done, you coat the whole thing with Elmer’s white glue.  This is the really messy part. The glue dries as it flows down and fills in the cracks between the wires so it doesn’t look like a spiral. Once the glue dries, you can paint it dark brown or any other bark color.

After the paint dries, just glue foliage to the branches.  The end result is several custom made trees that all look different.  Any size you want.  Below are some pictures of the end results.
